Interview With Singer And Rapper, LunaLuna

MARCH 2023- LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA-

LunaLuna, also known as ‘Luna’ is a creative singer and rapper from Denver, Colorado, now residing in Los Angeles, California. As a diverse and unique artist, she has had numerous projects that have caught the eye of others. Luna remains consistent on her journey, and is constantly improving. Known as ambitious, creative, and brilliant with her work, Luna explains the journey of her work. “Creating good habits, now that I have just released my debut EP and body of work, I want to hold myself accountable much like I describe in my song Juice Boxes & Lemonade. I want to work on consistency, continuing to apply myself to grow as a songwriter, rapper, singer, and overall creative visionary.” Luna is now putting in a lot of effort to display her skills, one day to achieve the highest level of success. She is on the right path to do so.

Luna speaks of her inspiration and what helps her get through rough times. “Being a part of the ballroom community has been a huge motivator in not only my personal but also creative life. Obviously a yearning to succeed and triumph in the music industry is a huge motivator, but the chosen family that I have found in ballroom; the leadership, the house mothers and fathers, have been the ones motivating me the most to do well. They genuinely want to see me succeed, and I want to make them proud. I’ve grown so much as a creative thinker and performer thanks to the teachings I have received from my community members.” Her goals and the reasons she pursues them set her up for success in all she undertakes.

Give Three qualities that describe you:

A lyricist, a dichotomy, and a talent worth looking into beneath my identity. My first love was writing and that translated directly into songwriting when I first began my solo music journey, with the nurturing of two parents who are also musicians from Colorado, Tisha Paradis, and Carlos Alberto. I describe myself as a dichotomy because I feel like there are two sides to my being both creatively and aesthetically, a big part of that came from my gender identity being a Two-Spirit indigenous person.

How have you overcome struggles to be where you are now?

Honestly, I believe there are more struggles to come then there are to overcome. Looking the way I do, presenting the way I do, will be a major deterrent to a lot of executives and artists already established in the industry. There are a lot of labels that I have found joy and confidence in claiming that will ultimately prove to be an obstacle in reference to my success due to an unfortunate lack of empathy and understanding in the world. But I have confidence that my hard work, that my art, will speak for itself.

As a business owner, what are some obstacles you have had to overcome to get where you are at?

Well I am my business, and I think a big part of the difficulty with that is doing most of it on your own as an indie artist. Distribution, licensing, content creation, social media management, booking shows, networking, branding, etc. The list goes on. I have to wear many hats, and it’s all worth it in the end, but the amount of work it takes just to make and release a small EP or even a single is a lot more than one from an outside perspective would assume.

Luna remains steadfast through it all. “I guess it's really important to stick to your ambitions. Even if your end goal is nowhere in sight. In the case of music, look up beats on youtube, record mini voice note songs, just start creating. If you feel that something is your calling then you should seek after it, don’t let that call go unanswered. Because at the end of it all, you’re going to be proud of the creative output, even if not the final result. You’ll be making progress, and you can’t achieve anything you want to unless you start.”

Luna mentions within the interview that certain individuals in her life have inspired her to be great, starting from her own family. “My parents have been the most influential people in my life, and I won’t ever stop saying that. Being the child of an immigrant as well as a gay mother. They have overcome every single obstacle thrown their way, and continue to only strive for their happiness and the happiness of others. Both of them also are creators of music and creative innovators. My love of music was birthed because I was surrounded by their love, drive, and passion for music and I will be forever indebted to them because of it.” Luna will be successful in achieving her goal because she never gives up, and in order to keep her position at the top, she can only see success in the years to come.

“My debut EP, Heads or Tails has officially been released on all streaming platforms! It’s a labor of love that I have been working on for over 4 years. It’s a Pop Rap R&B fusion project and it's all about subversion of self, two sides of the same coin, comfortability in one’s self and the trials and tribulations it took to get there.”
