Zion Sweet, also known as ‘Midnight Desperado’ is a Singer/Song-writter, Rapper, Producer, and Engineer from the Baltimore, Maryland area, now residing in Waco, Texas. Growing up, his parents were in the military so he moved around a lot. He was born in Tucson, Arizona but his earliest memories are in Baltimore. From there he has traveled to California, Japan, and now he is in Texas. Midnight Desperado stays devoted and works hard on his craft. To become more serious and dedicated to his business, Midnight Desperado only looks in one direction, and that’s ahead. “On March 29th, I released a three part single titled ‘MAYDAY!’. This is an introduction to my upcoming EP, ‘VNS (Venus)’ that’s been in the works since November 2020. My intention is to create a world in which the listener can get lost in and I’m really excited to show the world what I’ve made. I’ll be doing 2 shows in April. The first is on the 19th for a block party hosted by Blaccent. And the second will be the ‘JazzTrapnB Fest’ on the 26th. Both start at 6 PM and end around 10/11 PM. Also stream MAYDAY!, out everywhere!” Ambitious, observant, and a dreamer, Midnight Desperado is a well-rounded artist and creator who refuses to give up even when things don't go as planned.
Despite the struggles he’s faced throughout his career, he’s continued to strive as an artist and has made a difference even within his own hometown. His knowledge has helped him overcome hurdles that have made him who is now. “Escapism, and that’s the main foundation of the music I’m making right now. There’s a lot of crazy stuff going on in the world and I feel like music is a good tool to get away from all that kind of stuff. We need more things that bring us together, that shows us we’re all not that different from each other.” As an artist, Midnight Desperado is currently concentrating on expanding upon his already solid base for his business. Midnight Desperado has been aware of this and admits that his qualities of being versatile, witty and lyrical. Having bars as an artist, he is only getting better. “A piece of advice I’d want others to take from my work would be: create whatever is it you imagine. Be unique, be bold, don’t be afraid to stand out. It could be your distinctive perspective that could inspire the next person to also do great things.” Midnight Desperado understands the importance of being faithful and steadfast on his journey and being able to stay focused through his endeavors. Midnight Desperado kept it consistent and moving all throughout and even now in 2024.
Give Three qualities that describe you:
Ambitious- I know that if you want something in life you have to go get it. This is the main driver for me to continue to be self motived.
Observant- You can learn a lot by just paying close attention to the things happening around you. Most of my music is introspective, I almost feel like I find out more things about myself by the time I’m done writing certain songs.
Dreamer- Since kindergarten I knew I had a big imagination, the world really is a big canvas and our thoughts are what paint reality.
As a business owner, what are some obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are at?
I wanna say that it was realizing that I WAS the business. I’m still kind of figuring it out but in this industry you gotta learn how to “sell yourself” in a way.
Who were the most influential people in your life?
First I would say one of the most influential people in my life is my late aunt who introduced me to the piano. She taught me the C scale on her baby grand when I was 4/5 and ever since then I fell in love with the keys.
Secondly, my Grandma influenced me to be the compassionate, critical thinking person I am today. She taught me about God from an early age and I hold on to all she’s shown me to this day. Lastly, I would say that Donald Glover is one of my biggest influences of all time. What inspires me the most about him is that he doesn't shy away from being authentic in all aspects of his work whether it's music, TV, or whatever.
Midnight Desperado’s goal is to make people want to see more of him, which he has done already by putting in the hours of work and commitment. Both in front of and behind the scenes in the year 2023, he makes a difference in the business and music world. Even though Midnight Desperado is devoted to perfecting the art of his fashion to the highest level, his hardships have made him want to do even better in his business as well. He points out some advice to people to finish the interview. “Adversity definitely builds character. In January I was rear ended in Dallas coming from a friend's birthday celebration. At that point in time, that accident was my “last straw” type situation. Before that I was planning on how I was gonna tackle the year and felt really good about it so after that it felt like nothing was going right. I was depressed, I had isolated myself, and was barely eating/sleeping. Eventually though, something in me clicked. Instead of shutting down, I doubled down. The adversity started to fuel me, now it feels like nothing can hold me back with the right mindset.”
